The Tabernacle

The Tabernacle by Jennifer Tolbert
In the beginning of Genesis, God creates a beautiful garden where he can dwell with his people. However, their disobedience (sin) spoiled that plan and sin separated him from his people. God has not given up on his children.

In this story, we learn about a new plan for God to dwell with his people, in spite of their sinful ways. He instructs Moses and the Israelites to build a very specific place, called The Tabernacle, where God can live among his people again. The different parts to the Tabernacle teach us what is required to restore relationship with God.

Key Themes:
  • God wants a relationship with us.
  • We should be generous to offer our gifts and skills back to God.
  • God can restore relationships.

Memory Verse

Mark 12:29-31 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Introducing the Story Ideas
1. Tabernacle
Print out symbols of the tabernacle and place them while telling the kids about the different parts. This is an excellent resource about teaching kids this topic.

2. Blueprints
Show the children some examples of blueprints. There are very simple ones online you can print from home plan stores. SAY: Whenever someone builds a house, they start with a blueprint or a plan. This tells the builder exactly how to build the house. For example, how big it should be and where certain walls should be. What kind of fixtures it should have and what kind of materials to use: wood or stone.

God wanted to live among his people. But, he needed a house. He gave Moses a blue print, or plan, for how his house should be built. His house was called The Tabernacle.

3. Measure Your Classroom
Bring in measuring tapes, yard sticks and/or rulers. Measure different parts of your classroom such as the length and width of the classroom, size of tables, cabinets, etc. Discuss the importance of measurements when building a building. Why do they need to be exact? What if everyone measured using their own form of measurement? Would your building stand?

Story: In this story, we are reminded that God wants to dwell (or live) among us. The Israelites were God's children and just like most parents, God wanted to live with his children and have a relationship with them. God's house was called the Tabernacle. This is the story of how it was built and what it was like.

SHOW the power point Moses and the Tabernacle or read Exodus 25-40.
EMPHASIZE that:
  • God wants us to use our gifts to serve him.
  • God now lives in our hearts.
  • God gave Moses very specific directions for building the tabernacle.

The Golden Calf

The Golden Calf by Jennifer Tolbert
God has freed the Israelites from slavery using powerful plagues. He rescued them from the hands of the Egyptians by parting the Red Sea. God had led the people through the wilderness as a cloud and a pillar of fire. God had given the Israelites very clear instructions about how to please Him and promised that if they obeyed him, they would be his very special people.

But, in just 40 days, they began to forget all of that and turned to a God they had formed with their own hands.

Memory Verse

Mark 12:29-31 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Introducing the Story Ideas
1. Memory Games
Play some games that test the kids memory such as memory, trivia or game Where is the Ball? Isn't it amazing how God made our brains? He gave us a memory! Our memory helps us remember things that make us happy and things that make us sad. We can remember consequences so we can learn from our mistakes. Today, we are going to learn about when the children of Israel forgot about all that God had done for them.

2. What is an Idol?
Remind the children about the 10 Commandments and even more specifically, the first one. Ask the kids, "What does it mean to have other gods?" Do we worship other gods today? Brainstorm some things that we may make into idols. Depending on the age you may say: TV, toys, video games, phones, friends, someone famous, a sports star. An idol is anything that we look to for blessing, or help, or guidance instead of God. Today, our story is about the children of Israel creating and worshipping their own idol--a Golden Calf.

3. Playdough Calf
Give each child a piece of clay or playdough (bonus if its yellow or orange!). Challenge each kid to make their very best statue of a cow. Let each child show and describe their cow statue.

Then lead the children in discussed with questions like, "Do you think the cow you made could protect you?"
"Do you think it could listen to you and help you if needed something?"
"Would you want to bow down and worship this cow?"
"Would you call this cow your God?"

SAY: In todays story, the children of Israel made a cow statue just like we did today. Except, the held a festival and named their cow statue their new God! How do you think that made God feel after everything he had done for them?

Story: In this story, we learn about how the Israelites forgot about all that God had done for them. They forgot about the 10 Commandments that they agreed to follow! Instead they chose to create an idol and worship it instead of the true and living God. They pressured Aaron into going along with their plan. This story gives us a glimpse into how  displeased the Lord is when we set idols up in his place.

SHOW the power point Moses and the Golden Calf or read Exodus 32.
EMPHASIZE that:
  • God wants us to worship Him!
  • We need to remember what God has done for us.
  • We need to guard ourselves against idols.

The 10 Commandments by Jennifer Tolbert
The Israelites are now on their journey to the promised land. They are camping near Mt. Sinai. In this story, God promises Moses and the children of Israel that if they will obey the Lord, they will be His treasured people. The Israelites promise they will.

God knew the Israelites would need to know HOW to obey the Lord. God gave them a very clear set of instructions known as the Ten Commandments. If the people followed these instructions perfectly, they would be blameless before the Lord.

Memory Verse

Mark 12:29-31 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Introducing the Story Ideas
1. What Pleases the Lord?
Ephesians 5:10 says to: find out what pleases the Lord. Brainstorm things that please the Lord and things that displease the Lord. For younger children you may say, things that make God happy and things that make God sad. Ask the children how they know what makes God happy or sad? Imagine if you wanted to please God but you didn't really know how. Our story today was how God taught the Israelites how to please him.

2. Red Light, Green Light
Play a few rounds of a red light, green light. You can read the rules here. After the game, connect it to the story. SAY: In the Bible, there were things God said STOP to and things he said Go to. Introduce the idea of rules or boundaries. Lead a discussion about why we have rules or boundaries. Do they protect us? Do they teach us right and wrong? You can use the example of stop and go lights. What if no one paid attention and went whenever they wanted to? What could happen? Would it be safe to drive on the roads?

Story: In this story, we learn about how God began to teach the Israelites how to be his people. If they were going to be his people, he wanted them to know what pleased him and what displeased him. Even more than that, God made a list of commandments (or rules) to protect His children from the consequences of sin.

SHOW the power point Moses at Mt. Sinai or read Exodus 19-24.
EMPHASIZE that:
  • God wants his people to obey him.
  • We should find out what pleases the Lord.
  • God’s laws give us freedom and protection.

After over 400 years in slavery, Pharoah has agreed to "Let God's people go!" The Lord led the Israelites out of Egypt as a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire by night. However, as the Israelites reached the Red Sea, the Egyptians appeared ready to recapture them drag them back into captivity. Pharoah had change his mind. This story demonstrates that God will fight for you.

1. Would You Rather-Impossible Edition
Ask the kids some
"Would You Rather" Questions about things that would be impossible. For example: Would you rather be able to teleport to a different part of the world or be able to become invisible? OR Would you rather be able to make a toy to come life or have every toy in the world? The kids may have some too! Challenge the older kids to think of their own. Remind the kids that with God, anything is possible and our lesson today shows that!

2. The Great Escape
Purchase a premade one from Etsy or TPT or create an escape room in your classroom. You can include review questions and clues about the life of Moses so far. Here are some examples:
  1. Moses's mother made this to keep her son safe (A basket) Hide a basket in plain sight and put the next clue in it.
  2. Put the plagues in order. Once correct, give them their next clue.
  3. God gave the Israelites a specific set of directions for the Passover. One was to "cover their doorframe with the blood of the Lamb." Have red paper and tape so the kids can cover the door of the classroom.
  4. What does the word Exodus mean? Hide a dictionary in plain sight to help them if they don't remember. This can be the "exit" question.

Story: In this story, we learn about how God did the impossible to rescue the Israelites. Pharoah's had agreed to let God's people go, but his heart again grew hard and sent 600 chariots to bring the people back. Even after God sent terrible things like frogs, and flies and boils! Still, Pharoah was prideful he refused to admit defeat.

God delivered the Israelites in a miraculous way, proving again that he is the one true God.

The Plagues pt. 2 & Passover

The Passover by Jennifer Tolbert
After over 400 years in slavery, Pharoah has agreed to "Let God's people go!" However, the hard-hearted Pharoah only relented when God issued much suffering on the Egyptian people through the plagues.

The last, and most devastating plague resulted in the death of every first born among the Egyptian households. The Hebrew people were spared as long as they followed a specific set of directions that God would give them involving the sacrifice of a lamb and the protection of a home covered in its blood. This act would give the Israelite people clues as  to how God would eventually rescue them from being a slave to death!

1. Unleavened Bread from Mission Bible Class
Let the children taste and compare normal bread and unleavened bread (matzo bread from specialty shops or simply the bread we use for communion). Notice the air holes in the leavened bread that make it light and fluffy. This happens when leaven (like yeast) is added to the recipe and the dough is allowed to rise. Read a recipe for yeast bread and discuss how long it takes to make it. Compare that to a simple and quick recipe for unleavened bread. “If you were in a hurry, which kind of bread would you make? Of course, we would want to make the unleavened bread because we wouldn’t have to wait for it to rise. When the Lord brought the last plague on Egypt, He told the Israelites to eat a special meal and be ready to leave Egypt quickly. They did not have time to make leavened bread.”

3. Pharoah's Challenge by Trueway KidsThis a fun and engaging game that allows the group to compete in a series of challenges that represent each of the plagues of Egypt.
For each plague, come up with a challenge that represents the essence of the plague. For example:
  1. Water turned to blood: a water balloon toss with red water balloons.
  2. Frogs: a relay race where players must hop like a frog.
  3. Gnats: a puzzle challenge where players must untangle a bunch of strings
  4. Flies: a fly-swatter relay race where players must swat plastic flies
  5. Livestock diseased: a food-eating contest where players must eat something.
  6. Boils: a hot potato game where players must pass a hot potato around.
  7. Hail: a challenge where players must toss balls of ice into a bucket.
  8. Locusts: a puzzle challenge where players must assemble a giant locust puzzle.
  9. Darkness: a guess the item in the bag by touch challenge.
  10. Death of firstborn: a blindfold challenge where players must paint the doorpost on a picture.

Story: Remind the children why Abraham's family (known as the Hebrews) were now living in Egypt. Remind the children about the first seven plagues that God had used to convince Pharoah to let the Hebrew people go.

In this story, we learn about how God used plagues--really bad things to convince Pharoah to let God's people go. However, Pharoah's heart was hard and he refused. Even after God sent terrible things like frogs, and flies and boils! Still, Pharoah went toe to toe with God! Finally, God delivered a final and terrible blow. One that would affect the prideful and disobedient Egyptians in a horrible way, but would spare obedient Hebrews.

The Plagues by Jennifer Tolbert
Abraham's family has now become a great nation, however they are displaced from the land God had promised them. The new Pharoah has forgotten Joseph and what he had done for Egypt and no longer welcomes the Hebrews. In fact, he persecutes them and enslaves them. This is the story of how God used signs to prove that God was with Moses and to punish the Egyptians (and Pharoah) for their pride and unbelief.

Key Themes:
  • God used Moses to fulfill his promise to the Hebrews.
  • God used signs to prove his existence and power.

1.Hard vs. Soft Hearts from Mission Bible ClassCut a heart shape out of a dry, flat sponge. Pass the sponge heart around to all of the children and let them feel it. They can bend it and squeeze it because it is soft. Now pass around a stone on which you have previously drawn a heart with a waterproof marker. Talk about how hard the rock is.
Place the sponge heart and the rock heart in a shallow pan on the table. Hold up a glass of water and say, “This glass of water is like God’s word. God wants to pour His word into people’s hearts.” Slowly drip one drop of water at a time and then pour faster. Compare how the soft heart soaks up God’s word while His word just slides off of the hard heart. Talk about which heart lets the word of God inside.
“What kind of heart do you want to have?” In today’s story, we are going to learn about someone who had a very hard heart.

Abraham's family has now become a great nation, however they are displaced from the land God had promised them. The new Pharoah has forgotten Joseph and what he had done for Egypt and no longer welcomes the Hebrews. In fact, he persecutes them and enslaves them. This is the story of how God called Moses out of the wilderness of Midian to serve as a rescuer for his people. Later, God will use Moses to guide his people back to the Promised Land.

1. Candle Light by TruewayKids
Bring out a cake with a candle in it (or just the candle). Light the candle and watch as it melts. You could also make a small fire. Just make sure you and your child are safe and you follow all local safety laws. Ask your child what happens to the thing on fire. Explain to the child that the fire is consuming the candle or item because fire burns things. Explain that it would be a miracle if something did not burn up.

2. Partnering with God by TruewayKids
Strongly tighten the lid of a jar filled with a treat. Ask the child to open it. When the child can’t do it in his own strength, offer to help. Put the child’s hand on top of yours as you open the jar together. Point out that even though the child couldn’t open the jar in his own strength, together you could succeed.
Remind the child that God is very strong and there is nothing that He cannot do. Tell them that the things we can’t do on our own—such as loving our enemies or forgiving people who wrong us—are only possible with God to help us.

3. Lava Lamps
Bring a lava lamp or make a homemade lava lamp. Introduce the idea of watching something "burn" but never disappear.

Story: Remind the children why Abraham's family (known as the Hebrews) were now living in Egypt. Remind the children why Moses was now living in Midian.

In this story, we learn about the unique way God calls Moses to partner with him to free his chosen people-the Israelites. We see someone who was uniquely called by God feel completely unqualified. He even makes excuses and begs God to choose someone else. Each time, God reminds Moses that he is with him and gives him unique powers and signs to prove that he is partnering with God--who can do all things!

Moses-Early Life in Egypt by Jennifer Tolbert
Abraham's family has now become a great nation, however they are displaced from the land God had promised them. The new Pharoah has forgotten Joseph and what he had done for Egypt and no longer welcomes the Hebrews. 1. Animal Cracker Boats from TruewayKids.com
Ask the child if they have ever hidden something to keep it safe. Point out ways that you keep things safe such as locking your house or car.
To demonstrate the way Moses’ mother put him in a waterproof basket, you could do a little experiment. You will need rocks or other sinkable objects, foil, and animal cookies.
Fill a bowl with water (or use the shallow water at the edge of the river). Take an animal cookie and drop it into the water. Show how it is not protected from the water. Put an animal cookie on a rock. Ask the child if it seems safe. Drop the pebble into the water and show the child that the boat wasn’t secure.
Create a simple boat out of the foil (or fold a paper boat). Show the child that the animal cookies are safe and secure in the boat floating on the water.

Story: Review the story of Abraham to Joseph so far. Remind the children why Abraham's family (known as the Hebrews) were now living in Egypt.

In this story, we read about the birth of a new person that God will use to guide and rescue his people. His name was Moses. His birth and young life were much different that the life of his fellow Hebrews. He was a very special person. Later, God will use Moses in a very special way and for a very important purpose.

SHOW the power point Baby Moses or read Exodus 1:8-2:10.
EMPHASIZE that:
  • Moses's mother had courage and faith.
  • God is always with us, even when things go wrong.
  • God's plan will be accomplished.

Joseph Reunites With His Brothers; Joseph's Family in Egypt

Joseph Reunites With His Brothers; Joseph's Family in Egypt by Jennifer Tolbert
The covenant God made with Abraham has now passed to his grandson Jacob. Even though this inheritance was obtained by Jacob through deceptive ways, God continues to work his plan through his family. While Abraham was blessed with his one promised son, Isaac, his family tree continues to grow as his grandson Jacob is blessed with 12 sons.

This lesson is the story of the reconciliation of Joseph and his brothers and the unique circumstances that brought this reunion about.
Key Themes:
  • With God's help, we can face challenges with confidence, wisdom, and peace.
  • We should forgive others.
  • God can take bad circumstances and use them for good.

Memory Verse

God is our refuge and strength,

Introducing the Story Ideas
1. Family Reunions
Ask how many of the kids have ever been to a family reunion? What makes them special? What do you usually do? Draw a family tree tracing Abraham to Joseph and his brothers. SAY: In today's lesson we are going to talk about a special family reunion. Joseph had not seen his family in 22 years!

2. Change of Heart from Ministry to Children
Students will cut out two hearts from construction paper, tissue paper, or wrapping paper. Tell them that the first heart represents a heart that is sinful. Joseph’s brothers’ hearts were sinful when they threw Joseph down the well and sold him as a slave. Have the students decorate their first heart to represent a sinful heart in some way. It could be black with the “dirt” of sin, crumpled up or torn to show that it’s not in the best shape, or have words written on it that name sinful attitudes: greedy, hate, jealous, anger, selfish, etc.
The second heart represents a heart that changes to be like God wants us to be. Joseph’s brothers’ heart changed when they showed that they were willing to become Joseph’s slaves to save their brother Benjamin. This second heart can be new or shiny or list pure attitudes (love, kindness, peaceful, giving, etc.) to show the change.

3. Freeing Benjamin from Ministry to Children
Divide the students into two teams on opposite sides of your play area. A line divides the play area. A “Benjamin” from each team goes to stand on the play area’s boundary, behind the opposite team. They are in the opposite team’s prison. The rest of the team then tries to reach their Benjamin without being tagged. The opposing team can tag them anytime they cross the middle line into their territory. The strategy is for the teams to send some of their members to free their Benjamin while leaving others behind to tag members of the opposite team trying to cross over to free the Benjamin they’re guarding. When a player crosses the line and gets tagged by a defending team member, they’re out. The game is over when one team reaches and frees their Benjamin.
Play as many times as you like, choosing a new Benjamin each time. Afterward, remind the students that Benjamin’s brothers had a change of heart and were willing to take Benjamin’s place as Joseph’s slave so that he could go free.

Story: Review the story of Abraham to Jacob so far. Jacob (later known as Israel) had a very large family! Just like his father's before him, Jacob had inherited a promise the God would bless the entire world through his family. However, Jacob's life was marked with sadness. Remember, Jacob still believes Joseph is dead and to make matters worse, the land is in a severe famine (which means the land will not produce food and they are running out!)

In this story, Joseph's gift of prophecy is used to rescue lots of people from starvation, including his own family! After 22 years, Joseph forgives his brothers and is reunited with his brothers and father!

SHOW the power point Joseph Reunited with His Family or read Genesis 43-46.
EMPHASIZE that:
  • We should always forgive.
  • God is always with us, even when things go wrong.
  • God's plan will be accomplished in spite of people's failures/mistakes.

Pharoah's Dreams; Joseph's Triumphs by Jennifer Tolbert
The covenant God made with Abraham has now passed to his grandson Jacob. Even though this inheritance was obtained by Jacob through deceptive ways, God continues to work his plan through his family. While Abraham was blessed with his one promised son, Isaac, his family tree continues to grow as his grandson Jacob is blessed with 12 sons.

This lesson continues with the story of the hardships of Joseph, who was faithful each step of the way. His prophetic dreams begin what becomes a riches to rags to riches again, all at the work of God's hand. This turn in the story demonstrates that God can be working a heavenly plan that doesn't always make sense from an earthly point of view.
Key Themes:
  • We should always do the right thing.
  • We should be faithful to God in the good times and bad.
  • God had a plan for Joseph.

Introducing the Story Ideas
1. Dreams
Share a silly dream that you have had. Talk about dreams. Ask the kids to share a dream they can remember.

2. Standing Up from Junior Power Points
Have students form pairs and work with a partner on this activity. Each team will need to place a chair with its back against the wall so it does not slide easily. One person in each team will sit on a chair with their feet flat on the floor. The second person on the team will remain standing and will press with their index finger against their partner’s forehead while the person who is seated will try to rise to their feet. Discuss how difficult it was to stand up. Sometimes other people or Satan blocks our path or keeps us from being able to stand for what is right.

3. A Picture of Life from Junior Power Points
Set up tables and chairs, and form pairs. Have partners sit across from each other at a table. Then give each pair a plate and a handful of rice. Say: I’m going to assign each pair an item to illustrate using the rice, such as a house with a dog in the yard, an airplane with clouds, or a person holding a balloon. You’ll create your illustration by placing the rice, one grain at a time, onto your plate. If you pick up more than one grain of rice at a time, you’ll have to start over. Make the suggestions difficult, yet not impossible, for students to complete. Then have them begin their work. After a minute or so, interrupt them and say: One more thing . . . at times the table will shake, which might mess up your work. Be prepared. During the next few minutes, watch to see that students follow your instructions. Bump or gently push the tables as you pass by them from time to time. It’s OK if students try to save their creations by picking their plates up off the table. Allow time for students to attempt their illustrations; then have them show what they’ve done. Ask: What was it like to work on this project? Did you ever feel like giving up? When have you felt like that in life? How can we overcome what Satan does to us?

Story: Review the story of Abraham to Jacob so far. Jacob (later known as Israel) had a very large family! Just like his father's before him, Jacob had inherited a promise the God would bless the entire world through his family. However, his family also inherited the sins of jealousy which caused sibling rivalry and caused his children to sin.

In this story, we see how the consequences of his brothers jealousy sent Joseph down a path of hardships. However, in spite of the turn his life had taken, Josesph was faithful God and to what was right, even if it meant making his life harder.

SHOW the power point Joseph: Pharoah's Dreams or read Genesis 41:1-46.
EMPHASIZE that:
  • We should always do the right thing.
  • God is always with us, even when things go wrong.
  • God's plan will be accomplished in spite of people's failures/mistakes.
